EDGE has completed its acquisition of a controlling stake in Italian engine maker CMD, expanding its European manufacturing footprint.
The UAE defense group plans to scale CMD’s production and develop engines for its unmanned aerial systems and maritime platforms. Discussions on large-volume engine orders for drones are already underway, EDGE said.
Founded in 1989, CMD specializes in designing and developing piston engines for automotive, marine, and aviation applications. The deal follows an agreement announced in May and gives EDGE access to more than 35 years of engine manufacturing experience.
“CMD brings proven expertise in piston engines and advanced propulsion technologies, and our role is to help it grow, investing in its people, facilities and technology so it can meet the demand we see across unmanned, maritime and automotive markets,” EDGE CEO Hamad Al Marar said.
Beyond drones, EDGE is exploring marine applications for CMD engines with Abu Dhabi Ship Building, its naval shipbuilding subsidiary, and other partners. CMD will also continue serving its automotive customers.
EDGE Builds European Defense Network
The CMD acquisition adds to EDGE’s efforts to establish a broader industrial presence in Europe through local manufacturing and partnerships.
In June, EDGE launched EDGE Europe in Paris to coordinate its European operations and develop defense technologies on the continent.
The group has also pursued partnerships with European companies, including French aerospace and defense group Safran on proposed joint ventures covering advanced weapons development.
In January, EDGE and Indra Group agreed to establish a defense manufacturing entity in Spain focused on loitering munitions and smart weapons.
