General Dynamics Pushes Long-Range Precision Guidance Kit Beyond 31 Miles

General Dynamics Ordnance and Tactical Systems (GDOTS) has displayed a capability that could enable the US Army to extend the range and precision of its 155mm artillery.

At Yuma Proving Ground, GDOTS completed a key demonstration showing how its Long-Range Precision Guidance Kit (LR-PGK) accurately guided 155mm XM1113 Rocket Assisted Projectiles (RAP) at ranges beyond 50 kilometers (31 miles).

The army first publicized the XM1113 RAP’s development in August 2016, describing it as an artillery round designed to extend cannon firing ranges to more than 40 kilometers (25 miles).

It was launched from the M109 Paladin tracked self-propelled howitzer, Defence Express reported, although GDOTS did not identify the firing platform in its announcement.

The LR-PGK’s test performance made it the first US guidance kit to demonstrate such a capability, according to the company.

It also validates critical objectives that support the service’s Mobile Tactical Cannon program while providing increased capability for the legacy 39-caliber 155mm cannon fleet, including systems such as the M777.

“In addition to demonstrating precision at unprecedented ranges, this test validates the performance, maturity, and growth potential of the LR-PGK,” said Michael Bate, GDOTS Senior VP and General Manager.

Enhanced Range and Accuracy

GDOTS designed the LR-PGK with a modular architecture intended to improve the accuracy and effective range of compatible 155mm artillery projectiles, including the XM1113, the M1128, and other next-generation rocket-assisted projectiles.

The company is conducting more tests to further enhance the LR-PGK’s performance and adaptability against evolving battlefield conditions.

GDOTS is not the only company developing an LR-PGK for the army. BAE Systems has also developed its own 155mm LR-PGK designed to improve accuracy at extended ranges.
