BAE Secures $30M to Modernize US Navy IFF Transponder Technology

The US Navy has awarded BAE Systems a $30 million contract to upgrade the AN/APX-123A(V) common transponder technology used in Identification Friend or Foe (IFF) operations.

The upgraded system will replace existing IFF transponders across multiple platforms, including drones, ships, fixed-wing aircraft, and helicopters.

The transponder will support air defense, weapon systems, and air traffic control for the US Navy and joint forces.

Work will be conducted at BAE Systems facilities in New York and Texas, with delivery expected by 2027.

“Common transponders provide our service men and women with a reliable and secure solution to help them identify friendly forces and make decisions in a variety of threat environments,” said Seth Guanu, Combat Identification Products program area director at BAE Systems.

“The level of speed, security, and accuracy matters to support interoperability across US forces. This modernization effort enables us to deliver a critical capability to thousands of existing applications and equip emerging platforms,” added Guanu.

Latest Contracts for US Navy

BAE Systems continues to support key US Navy programs through a series of recent contracts.

Earlier this month, the company was selected to provide support and integration services for the Sea-Launched Cruise Missile-Nuclear program.

In January, the defense firm received a $70-million contract to upgrade the US Navy’s Mk 45 5-inch naval gun systems to the Mod 4 standard.

In October 2024, the US awarded BAE Systems $92 million to continue production of propulsors for Virginia-class nuclear-powered attack submarines.
