General Dynamics has been awarded a $728-million contract to provide the US Army with an unspecified number of 120mm Insensitive Munition High Explosive – Tracer (IM HE-T) rounds.
Insensitive munitions are engineered to resist accidental detonation from heat, shock, impact, or nearby explosions.
Sometimes referred to as “safe munitions,” they incorporate specialized materials and design features to improve safety during storage, transport, and combat operations.
According to the Department of Defense, the contract was awarded following a competitive solicitation process that resulted in a single bid.
Deliveries are expected to be completed by 2030.
Enhancing Combat Support Capabilities
The 120mm IM HE-T round is designed to support main battle tank operations by providing enhanced firepower against bunkers, fortifications, and lightly armored targets.
It complements existing tank ammunition with an added focus on operational safety and versatility.
The round features a dual-mode fuse, allowing for either immediate detonation on impact or delayed detonation after penetrating a target.
Weighing approximately 16 kilograms (35 pounds), the munition is also noted for its accuracy at extended ranges.
It is intended to give armored units a more lethal and reliable option for supporting infantry in high-risk environments, without compromising on safety.
