The US Army has approved the full-rate production of its M1147 120mm Advanced Multi-Purpose (AMP) round, designed to provide next-generation firepower to M1 Abrams main battle tanks.
Announced on Friday, the decision moves the M1147 program beyond low-rate initial production, providing a critical capability to meet the needs of both the US Army and its international partners.
Achieving full-rate production means the ammunition has passed all necessary testing and is now ready to be manufactured at the highest production capacity.
“Approval of full-rate production for the M1147 AMP round is a significant achievement, representing years of dedication by our team and our commitment to equipping soldiers with the best ammunition,” program executive officer Maj. Gen. John T. Reim explained.
Four Legacy Rounds Into One
The M1147 AMP round consolidates four legacy rounds into one, boosting logistical efficiency and simplifying the tank’s basic load.
It combines the capabilities of the M830 High-Explosive Anti-Tank cartridge, the M830A1 Multi-Purpose Anti-Tank cartridge, the M1028 Canister cartridge, and the M908 Obstacle Reduction cartridge.
This multi-role round gives Abrams tank crews the ability to counter anti-tank guided missile teams and defeat armored threats.
It also allows units to breach reinforced concrete walls, enhancing effectiveness in urban and fortified environments.
“As we continue to produce this advanced round, the M1147 will play a crucial role in providing overmatch capabilities and enhanced lethality to the M1 Abrams main battle tank,” Reim stated.
