UAE’s EDGE Develops MK 82 Aircraft Munition for Hardened Targets

Emirati defense group EDGE has completed development of the MK 82 Penetrator aircraft munition, designed to penetrate reinforced concrete more than 1 meter (3.28 feet) thick.

The MK 82 Penetrator is based on the 500-pound (227-kilogram) US-built MK 82 General Purpose bomb and retains compatibility with aircraft and precision-guidance kits designed for the standard munition.

Developed and manufactured by EDGE subsidiary LAHAB, the Penetrator also supports precision-guidance kits from EDGE’s AL TARIQ and THUNDER families.

Unlike the US General Purpose munition, designed for soft, fragment-sensitive targets such as troops, petroleum-based fuel and lubricant supplies, and radars, the Penetrator targets hardened targets such as bunkers.

EDGE said the munition demonstrated no “J” effect during trials, meaning it maintained its trajectory after penetrating the target without significant deflection.

Sovereign Capability

The UAE Ministry of Defense awarded EDGE a 4.36-billion-dirham ($1.19-billion) contract in February 2025 to produce and deliver MK 81, MK 82, MK 83, and MK 84 general-purpose aerial munitions.

Domestic development of the MK 82 Penetrator provides the UAE with a sovereign capability in an additional key munition category. The next-generation MK 83 Penetrator aircraft munition is also at an advanced stage of development, according to EDGE.

“We have introduced a new application-specific product that expands the end-user’s capabilities while maintaining familiarity and ease of use,” LAHAB CEO Mohammed Arbabi said.

“Designed for hardened reinforced targets/bunkers, it delivers greater flexibility and enhanced capability without introducing unnecessary complexity.

“More importantly, we see it as part of our duty to continuously understand our end-user’s evolving needs and provide the right capabilities. This is a reflection of our broader commitment to serving and strengthening our national capabilities.”
