Ukraine Tests Whether AI Can Guide Drones to Moving Targets
Ukraine is testing whether artificial intelligence can help drones detect, acquire, and engage moving ground targets without continuous pilot control.
The Ministry of Defence of Ukraine and the Brave1 defense innovation cluster recently evaluated autonomous guidance systems from seven companies, assessing how well their AI-enabled drones could strike moving targets.
Each drone had to fly 2 kilometers (1.24 miles), detect and acquire a moving lightly armored vehicle from at least 500 meters (0.31 miles), and hit it autonomously. Companies received up to three attempts and needed at least two successful strikes to pass.
