Leopard 2A8 Tanks to Get New Communications Systems

KNDS Germany will equip newly built Leopard 2A8 tanks for international customers with Intracom Defense’s WiSPRevo communications and information system.

The system will provide digital crew communications and networking on the latest Leopard 2 variant, with Intracom Defense saying its Dynamic Noise Reduction technology is designed to improve voice clarity inside the noisy environment of an armored vehicle.

The system is also intended to reduce crew exposure to excessive noise and improve situational awareness.

WiSPRevo is designed to connect crew communications with tactical radios, command-and-control applications, sensors, and onboard computing systems. Its architecture can also accommodate changes over the vehicle’s service life.

Improving Leopard 2A8

KNDS introduced the Leopard 2A8 as a new-production configuration with several upgrades over earlier Leopard 2 versions.

One of the most significant changes is the integration of Rafael’s Trophy active protection system. KNDS says the system is designed to protect the tank against anti-tank guided missiles and rocket-propelled grenades.

Firepower has also been updated. The Leopard 2A8 uses the 120mm Rheinmetall L55A1 smoothbore gun, while its fire-control system includes stabilized sights, thermal imagers, and laser rangefinders for the commander and gunner.
