US Approves $325M Sale of Abrams Tank Sustainment Support to Kuwait
The US State Department has approved a potential $325 million sale to Kuwait for sustainment support and related equipment for the M1A2 Abrams main battle tank systems.
The proposed deal includes services and equipment to support both Kuwait’s legacy M1A2 tanks and its newer M1A2K variants.
It also covers repair parts, spare parts, replacement materials, and other logistics and program support components.
Kuwait currently operates around 218 Abrams tanks.
“The proposed sale will improve Kuwait’s capability to meet current and future threats by assisting it in maintaining higher levels of operational readiness while meeting its modernization and professionalization goals,” the Defense Security Cooperation Agency stated.
General Dynamics Land Systems will serve as the principal contractor. No offset agreement has been proposed.
Previous Abrams Approvals for Kuwait
This follows a December approval for a $300 million sale to provide military vehicle maintenance and sustainment capabilities to Kuwait.
In September 2022, the US also approved a $250 million sale of M1A2K tank ammunition to the Gulf state.
Kuwait is pursuing a broad defense modernization effort, with defense spending reaching a record $6.1 billion in 2024. That figure is projected to grow at an annual rate of over 3 percent from 2025 through 2029.
