Ukraine Greenlights ‘Spider’ UGV Utility for Armed Forces

Ukraine’s Ministry of Defence has permitted the use of the domestically built “Spider” unmanned ground vehicle (UGV) for the military.

Developed through frontline troops’ practical combat experience, the drone will support armed forces tasks, particularly in engineering and logistics.

The system weighs approximately 50 kilograms (110 pounds) and has a payload capacity of 100 kilograms (220 pounds).

Its compact dimensions allow warfighters to transport two of the robots in the back of a pickup truck.

The Spider has four engines to sustain mobility across complex terrains and confined spaces.

The drone can be controlled in an electronic warfare domain and climb steep slopes.

‘Donkey’ UGV Approved

Earlier in May, the Ukrainian defense agency codified the utility of a separate UGV for the military.

This platform, called the “Donkey,” is capable of transporting 200 kilograms (441 pounds) of equipment and pulling other military vehicles the size of an SUV that are stuck in mud.

It employs an electronic warfare-resistant control that could be coupled with wired modules to maintain remote functionality in the field.
