Thyssenkrupp Receives Additional Invincible Sub Orders From Singapore
Singapore’s Ministry of Defence has contracted thyssenkrupp Marine Systems to deliver two additional Invincible-class submarines.
This is in addition to the four submarines already ordered by the Southeast Asian country, two of which have been delivered and were commissioned in September 2024.
Ordered in 2013, the remaining two submarines are expected to be delivered to the Republic of Singapore Navy (RSN) in 2028.
Meanwhile, the additional pair of underwater vessels are projected for delivery from 2034 as part of the RSN’s submarine force renewal program.
The latest purchase reflects the heightened security concerns around the world following the outbreak of the Ukraine war, described as “turbulent times” by the Singaporean Defense Minister Ng Eng Hen in March.
“The war in Ukraine highlights the vulnerability of smaller states to larger powers and how we need to be prepared,” he added.
Invincible-Class Features
The Invincible-class is a replacement for the aging Challenger-class and Archer-class submarines, the first of which were commissioned in 2000 and 2011, respectively.
The 70-meter (230-feet) conventionally-powered attack submarine class features a stealth design, while an air propulsion system enhances its underwater endurance.
Customized by the Defence Science and Technology Agency for Singapore’s needs, the class is designed to operate in shallow and busy tropical waters with small crews.
High Submarine Demand
Meanwhile, thyssenkrupp Marine Systems expressed confidence in delivering the vessels despite prior orders to the tune of 16 billion euros ($17.81 billion).
“The order expansion underscores the generally positive market situation in naval shipbuilding and gives us the opportunity to further expand our very well-filled order book,” thyssenkrupp Marine Systems CEO Oliver Burkhard said.
“We are also proud that Singapore has once again placed its trust in us, as our partnership goes far beyond the production of submarines. We feel deeply connected to the country and contribute to the security and defense capabilities of our customer’s country with our products.”
