General Dynamics Rolls Out 100th Ajax Vehicle for British Army

General Dynamics UK has completed work on the 100th Ajax vehicle, which is destined for service with the British Army’s Household Cavalry Regiment.

The Ajax family of next-generation armored vehicles is a key element of the British Army’s modernization strategy to increase combat effectiveness.

“This achievement shows the Land Industrial Strategy in action and is a testament to a resilient and dedicated enterprise which supports over 4,000 UK jobs and 750 direct roles at the heart of our operations in South Wales,” stated the company.

Ajax Vechile Features

Ajax is the British Army’s next-generation armored fighting vehicle, designed for modern, network-enabled operations.

The vehicle weighs up to 42 tons, has a top speed of 70 kilometers (43 miles) per hour, and carries a crew of three.

Built for combined arms and multinational operations, Ajax is suited for a range of environments and missions.

It features a fully digital and integrated design, enabling intelligence, surveillance, target acquisition, and reconnaissance operations in all weather conditions.

Its modular design includes a surplus payload capacity and an open electronic architecture, allowing for future upgrades.

The Ajax Program

General Dynamics Land Systems is set to deliver 589 vehicles across six variants for the UK under a $3.7-billion contract.

Full operational capability is expected between October 2028 and September 2029, once the UK Army has trained and equipped units to use the platform.

Initial deliveries began in February 2019 and are planned to continue throughout this year, eight years later than initially scheduled.

The Ajax program has faced criticism over extended delays linked to persistent design problems.

Progress was further hindered when testing revealed serious issues with noise and vibration, leading to health concerns, including hearing problems among some personnel, The Guardian reported.
