Elbit to Supply Helicopter Self-Protection Suite to Asia-Pacific Nation
Israeli-based defense firm Elbit Systems has been awarded a $200-million contract to deliver its helicopter self-protection suite to an undisclosed Asia-Pacific country.
The four-year agreement covers the supply of Elbit’s electronic warfare and airborne laser technology, which heightens the survivability and mission effectiveness of military helicopters against “shoulder-fired heat seeking anti-aircraft missiles.”
The self-protection suite will be installed on both attack and utility helicopters.
“There is an increasing demand across the globe for airborne protection solutions as aircraft, particularly helicopters, face a growing threat from anti-aircraft missiles,” Elbit President and CEO Bezhalel Machlis said.
“Our portfolio of sophisticated yet mature capabilities position us well to address this growing need.”
Airborne Self-Protection
Elbit’s airborne self-protection system features “cutting-edge, comprehensive, and modular” electronic warfare solutions that improve the defense capabilities of all aircraft platforms.
The technology comprises the Infra-Red Passive Airborne Warning System (PAWS IR) and the Mini-MUSIC Direct Infra-Red Counter Measure (DIRCM) System.
Combat-Proven Warning System
The less than 20-kilogram (44 pounds) PAWS family of systems is equipped with multiple threat detection and tracking features that allow for enhanced survivability in all weather and visibility.
The IR-centric system includes collision alerts and better situational awareness through its real-time image processing and display.
PAWS is also capable of fast, highly accurate, automatic management of all countermeasures available on board against approaching threats.
Laser-Based Countermeasure Systems
The company’s DIRCM System features advanced laser technology integrated into a high frame-rate thermal camera and small, dynamic mirror turret to deliver reliable protection.
The 19-kilogram (43 pounds) mini-MUSIC system has an open architecture design enabling seamless integration onto any type of aircraft.
Mini-MUSIC is also compatible with any missile warning system and other aircraft defensive aids.
