Sweden, Singapore to Cooperate on Land Systems Under Defense Deal

Sweden and Singapore have signed a long-term cooperation agreement focused on joint land domain studies.

The agreement was concluded between the Test & Evaluation Division of the Swedish Defence Administration (FMV) and Singapore’s Defence Science and Technology Agency (DSTA), the countries’ national institutions for defense development.

“The new cooperation agreement is a clear sign of the Swedish determination to deliver on the new defense policy direction for the Indo-Pacific region,” stated Jonas Lotsne, Head of the Army Equipment Business Area at FMV.

The recent announcement builds on a previous deal involving defense, energy, transport, and civil aviation between the two countries.

DSTA’s Deputy Managing Director Roy Chan emphasized that “the partnership with FMV enables in-depth knowledge exchange between our countries and contributes to our armed forces being better equipped to meet future threats.”

Singapore’s Defense Development

Singapore seeks to strengthen its international defense partnerships while continuing to advance its domestically developed military systems.

Earlier this month, Singapore’s DSTA partnered with Thales to develop AI technologies for combat systems.

The cooperation includes creating a joint facility for developing AI applications to support counter-drone operations.

In February, the Republic of Singapore Navy deployed locally produced unmanned surface vessels for patrol missions in the Singapore Strait.

In January, US firm Lockheed Martin won an $8.7-million contract to upgrade Singapore’s F-16 fighter jets.

Last September, the US State Department approved a potential $133-million sale of AIM-120C-8 Advanced Medium Range Air-to-Air Missiles to the Asian country.
