Boeing to Install High-Tech Radar on USAF F-15E Fighters

American aerospace firm Boeing is modifying dozens of F-15E fighter jets by integrating a cutting-edge radar and electronic warfare system.

Called the Eagle Passive Active Warning and Survivability System (EPAWSS), the tech will provide F-15 pilots with advanced capabilities to detect and counter ground and airborne threats.

The EPAWSS will also reportedly help improve the aircraft’s battlefield situational awareness.

According to Boeing official Prat Kumar, the system enhances mission effectiveness and survivability for the F-15 fighters in contested environments.

It also strengthens a “highly capable, lethal aircraft” to penetrate advanced enemy air defenses and improve mission flexibility.

Bringing the F-15 Into the Digital Age

Langley Air Force Base officer Col. Matthew Schorr said that the EPAWSS will bring all-new processing capabilities to the F-15, which was designed in the 1970s.

In addition to detecting threats, the system can scramble radar signals to ensure that the F-15 goes unnoticed.

“It confuses the enemy radar, and it provides (pilots) a little bit more cover,” he said, as quoted by San Antonio Express-News. “The theory is that, by scrambling that electronic signature, it allows the F-15 to operate a little bit closer to where the threat might be.”
