Oshkosh Starts First Dutch Kaaiman Patrol Vehicle Prototype

Oshkosh Defense has begun building the first prototype of the Netherlands’ Kaaiman patrol vehicle, adapting its existing tactical vehicle for forces operating in coastal and difficult terrain.

The prototype is part of a program to supply 150 Dutch Expeditionary Patrol Vehicles (DXPVs), which the Netherlands selected in 2025. Deliveries are expected to begin in 2028.

By using its existing Joint Light Tactical Vehicle (JLTV) platform and production line, Oshkosh aims to shorten development time while tailoring the vehicle to Dutch requirements.

The DXPV adds features for expeditionary and littoral missions, including corrosion protection for maritime environments, improved suspension, enhanced off-road mobility, modular protection options, and integrated mission systems.

“Because we’re building on a mature platform from an active production line, we can move from concept to prototype much faster than traditional vehicle development,” Oshkosh vice president Jeff Heggemeie said.

Dutch Expeditionary Patrol Vehicle

The DXPV is a Dutch variant of the Oshkosh JLTV, a light tactical vehicle designed to provide protected mobility for military forces.

Rather than a dedicated amphibious vehicle, the DXPV is a wheeled land vehicle adapted for expeditionary operations. Dutch requirements call for the vehicle to withstand harsh littoral conditions and saltwater exposure, while allowing for the integration of future weapons and sensors.

The Netherlands selected the vehicle under its Future Littoral All Terrain Mobility-Patrol Vehicle program, which seeks a patrol platform capable of operating in demanding coastal and amphibious environments.

In January, the Netherlands ordered DXPVs in a deal valued at $25 million to $30 million.

The order followed an April 2025 purchase of 150 DXPVs under the same program.
