Russia Practiced Central Asian Incursion in Multinational War Games

Russia has rehearsed a cross-border counter-offensive and the launch of a foothold inside neighboring Central Asian territory during its quadrennial Center 2026 military exercise.

The maneuvers took place across 11 training grounds and the Caspian Sea, with the drills involving more than 47,000 personnel, 2,000 military vehicles, 90 aircraft, and 77 vessels.

Military contingents from Belarus, China, Kyrgyzstan, Mongolia, Pakistan, and Tajikistan also participated in the event.

Moscow did not publicly name the hypothetical adversary, though sources noted Kazakhstan could fit the “external aggressor” description as it shares a land border with Russia’s west-central region of Chelyabinsk and has access to the Caspian Sea.

Briefing Russian President Vladimir Putin at the Chebarkul training ground in the Chelyabinsk oblast, Deputy Defense Minister Yunus-Bek Yevkurov detailed the operational scenario for the wargames.

“The coalition troop grouping has repelled the main attack in the South Urals direction, restored the situation, and has been conducting offensive operations … to liberate captured territory and establish a security zone in the adjacent area,” Yevkurov stated.

Recycling Tactics

Among the exercise’s highlights are testing of new weaponry and strategies drawn from frontlines in Ukraine, including missions tied to ground robotics, counter-drone modules, and underground defense penetration.

At the same time, the event saw four long-range aircraft conducting simulated strikes on enemy infrastructure, while the Russian Navy’s Caspian Flotilla formation performed anti-landing operations using unmanned surface vessels.

Yevkurov reported that over 2,000 warfighters and 600 vehicles with battlefield experience in Ukraine participated.

Following the exercise’s conclusion, 800 soldiers and nearly 300 equipment units will deploy directly to the war zone.
