The Australian Army has officially concluded flying operations of its Airbus Armed Reconnaissance Helicopter (ARH) Tigers, marking the end of the platforms’ 22 years of service.
The military’s 1st Aviation Regiment, which operated the fleet, commemorated the milestone in Darwin, Northern Territory, with a farewell flyover, an open day for troops and families, and a formal dinner.
The retirement ceremony coincides with the unit’s incremental relocation 1,860 kilometers (1,156 miles) east to Townsville, Queensland.
Legacy and Shift
The Australian Army adopted 22 Tigers in 2001 to combine reconnaissance, electronic warfare, and precision strike capabilities into a single aircraft.
However, setbacks tied to sustainment and overall readiness prompted Canberra to accelerate the fleet’s phase-out under the country’s latest National Defence Strategy.
The service is now working to replace the Tigers with 29 Boeing AH-64E Apache attack helicopters under a $3.5-billion foreign military sale with the US in 2021.
To date, the army has received six of the new rotary-wing platforms, with the remaining shipments expected through late 2029.
“The end of ARH Tiger flying operations is a significant moment for the 1st Aviation Regiment, but it also marks the beginning of an exciting new chapter as we continue our relocation to Townsville and further build Australia’s attack helicopter capability around the AH-64E Apache,” Commander Army Aviation Maj. Gen. David Hafner stated.
“Our soldiers, aircrew and maintainers have achieved an extraordinary transition from the ARH Tiger to the Apache, while continuing to deliver training and operational outputs.”
Canberra is evaluating disposal options for the retired airframes, including a potential transfer to the Ukrainian Armed Forces in defense against Russia’s ongoing invasion.
