A US military intelligence report produced with the help of artificial intelligence mistakenly identified cargo aboard a Chinese ship as components linked to a nuclear weapons program, nearly triggering a military operation.
According to a CNN report, a military analyst used an AI chatbot to assess intelligence on the vessel while it was in the Middle East. The chatbot combined open-source and signals intelligence but misidentified material listed on the ship’s manifest.
The analyst then reportedly used AI to format the findings into a standard intelligence report, which the military circulated.
