US Launches Mobile Secure-Facility Network for Classified Defense Work

The US Department of Defense has launched an initiative to establish 50 mobile secure facilities nationwide, giving more companies access to classified defense work.

Led by the Office of Industrial Base Growth in partnership with the Space Development Agency, the Secure Space Network will deploy mobile Sensitive Compartmented Information Facilities (SCIFs) equipped with systems for handling highly classified information.

SCIFs are accredited spaces designed to protect classified information from unauthorized access.

Building a permanent facility can be costly and time-consuming, particularly for small businesses and companies entering the defense market.

According to the department, the initiative is intended to help more companies move from unclassified cooperation into classified development and production, while increasing competition within the US defense industrial base.

Expanding Access

Units will be positioned at military installations, industry support centers, and other locations connected to defense development and production.

The network will provide an alternative for authorized suppliers who have relevant technologies but lack secure infrastructure of their own.

It will allow them to collaborate directly with government teams, develop new advanced capabilities, and compete for classified defense work.

The initiative will combine rapidly deployable units with fixed facilities providing longer-term capacity.

Washington also plans to establish a repeatable production process, allowing additional secure workspaces to be manufactured and deployed as demand increases.
