Montenegro Upgrades Army’s Transport Fleet With Italian Eurocargo Trucks

Montenegro has received 31 Iveco Eurocargo logistics vehicles from Italy, marking the initial delivery under a defense agreement to modernize the Balkan state’s military transport network.

The shipment includes Eurocargo MLL150 and M170 variants configured for troop and materiel movements across off-road terrain.

Podgorica and Rome’s overall deal covers up to 86 platforms worth nearly 20 million euros ($23.1 million), with the cost drawn from a local Montenegrin bank loan.

The remaining 55 assets, comprising additional troop transport trucks alongside specialized water and fuel tankers, are scheduled to arrive by the end of the year at the Milovan Šaranović barracks in Danilovgrad.

The full package includes spare parts, diagnostic tools, sustainment training, and a two-year warranty.

Replacing 30-Year-Old Systems

Sources noted that the milestone forms part of the Montenegrin Ground Army’s ongoing replacement of legacy heavy trucks it inherited from the Yugoslav People’s Army, most of which have been operational for over three decades.

Beyond military duties, defense officials said the new fleet will bolster civil protection capabilities during crisis situations.

“The modernization of logistics capacities is therefore not only an investment in the capabilities of the Army of Montenegro, but also in the overall resilience of the state,” Defence Minister Dragan Krapović said.

“Modern logistics allows for greater efficiency in peacetime and the regular execution of military tasks, while in crisis situations the available capacities can be put to use to protect the lives, property and safety of citizens.”

The Eurocargo

Iveco’s flagship Eurocargo vehicle is offered in both 4×4 and 4×2 drive configurations, enabling flexibility across demanding missions.

The truck weighs up to 18 tonnes (39,683 pounds), depending on configuration, and is supported by electronically controlled air suspension to maintain clearance when carrying various cargo loads.

It is powered by either Tector 5 or 7 diesel engines, offering output between 160 and 320 horsepower for a top speed of 110 kilometers (68 miles) per hour.
