Germany Moves Forward With ASUL Counter-Drone System Upgrade

Germany has commissioned Hensoldt to enhance the functional capabilities of the ASUL defense system against unmanned aerial systems.

ASUL is a modular counter-drone system designed for integration into broader air defense networks for real-time detection, classification, identification, and engagement of small unmanned aircraft.

It combines scalable sensors and effectors, active and passive radar, and electro-optical systems.

Based on operational feedback and recent technological developments, Hensoldt plans to upgrade the platform to meet the evolving requirements of the Bundeswehr, incorporating advanced sensor technologies and software-based enhancements.

ASUL was developed by ESG Elektroniksystem- und Logistik-GmbH, a subsidiary of Hensoldt, and delivered to the German Armed Forces in 2022.

Features

ASUL consists of two container-based units.

The first, a 10-foot (3-meter) module, handles detection and identification using an extendable mast with three radars, day/night cameras, and a radio frequency direction finder to locate drone signals and possibly their operators.

The second, a 20-foot (6-meter) unit, manages threat response and includes a high-power, remote-controlled jammer that disrupts drone communications over several kilometers.

ASUL integrates the Elysion Mission Core software, which uses AI-based algorithms to fuse real-time sensor data to provide operators with timely, informed response options to support decision-making.

When the system detects a potential target, the operator is immediately notified to determine if the drone is a threat.

The jammer then interrupts the drone’s signal to its controller, causing it to hover, allowing the operator to decide the next steps based on the threat level.
