US Wraps Up Testing of Advanced Military Communication System for Taiwan

Taiwan’s Ministry of National Defense announced that its new military communication system has completed testing in the US and is expected to be delivered to the island nation soon.

The Field Information Communications System (FICS), acquired in 2022 under a deal worth 6.99 billion New Taiwan dollars ($246 million), is designed to enhance Taiwan’s field units’ information transmission and reception capabilities.

It will be integrated into the country’s military communications infrastructure.

Scheduled for delivery by the fourth quarter of 2025, the system will be installed on refurbished M1097A2 High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicles.

Modernizing Taiwan’s Communication Capability

The FICS is a third-generation land communication system, primarily used by troops in the field.

It aims to provide mobile, secure communications and contribute to the Taiwanese military’s modernization efforts.

Set to replace the existing Tactical Area Communication System, the FICS will enhance weapon systems like the M142 High Mobility Artillery Rocket System, improving target accuracy.

Once delivered, the system will be handed over to the Information, Communications, and Electronic Force Command and equipped with a security device certified by Taiwan’s National Security Bureau.

To further strengthen its security, the FICS will be augmented by monitoring systems and encryption technologies developed by the state-run National Chung-Shan Institute of Science and Technology.
