Horizon Frigate Mid-Life Upgrade Program Completes Design Review

European consortiums Naviris and Eurosam have completed the critical design review of the Horizon frigate mid-life upgrade program, paving the way for its production phase.

Horizon-class warships of the French and Italian navies are set to undergo their midlife upgrades from 2026 to 2030.

The upgrades will enhance the vessels’ capabilities and extend their operational lifespan.

The class — measuring 153 meters (501 feet) — was delivered between 2009 and 2011.

Awarded in 2023, the upgrade is led by Naviris and Eurosam and supported by Fincantieri, Naval Group, and key partners such as Leonardo, Thales, SiGen, and MBDA.

Naviris is a joint venture between Naval Group and Fincantieri, while Eurosam is equally owned by MBDA France, MBDA Italy, and Thales Group.

Mid-Life Upgrade Program

The upgrade includes integration onboard the Aster missile-based PAAMS anti-air warfare system and electronic warfare systems.

The PAMMS, or Principle Anti-Air Missile System, includes a long-range radar and is capable of intercepting tactical ballistic missiles, cruise missiles, combat aircraft, and drones.

The system features the Aster 15 and Aster 30 as effectors, with ranges of 30 kilometers (18.6 miles) and over 100 kilometers (62 miles), respectively.

The integration of new systems will begin on the first Italian vessel in mid-2026, followed by the second vessel at the end of 2027.

The first French vessel will start to be integrated with the new systems from mid-2028 and the second at the end of 2029.
