Rauma Completes First Pohjanmaa Corvette Hull for Finland

Rauma Marine Constructions has finalized the hull development of the Finnish Navy’s first Pohjanmaa-class multi-purpose corvette.

Outfitting of the vessel will continue in Satakunta in southern Finland until its official induction later this spring.

Meanwhile, Rauma completed the production of a heavy-lift ramp and will extend work for a submersible barge that will both support the launch of the initial corvette.

Advanced Naval Assets

The milestone is part of Helsinki’s program to construct up to four modern warships to replace the navy’s aging anti-submarine and missile boats.

Rauma is scheduled to deliver all the corvettes under this initiative by 2029.

Production of the force’s second Pohjanmaa system began in October 2024.

“The ships are designed to operate in the changing conditions of the Baltic Sea,” the Finnish Defence Forces said in its latest announcement.

“The corvettes are equipped for year-round naval operations and can perform missions such as maritime attack prevention, naval mine-laying, underwater warfare, and securing maritime connections.”

The Finnish Pohjanmaa Warship

The 17-meter (384-foot) Pohjanmaa corvette will be fitted with multi-domain missiles, remote weapon systems, automatic guns, torpedoes, and an electronic warfare capability.

It will be powered by a combined diesel-electric and gas engine with 38,000 horsepower, twin bow thrusters, and twin controllable pitch propellers.

The vessel will be able to carry over 70 personnel, a helicopter, and additional naval air solutions.

The ship will have an operational endurance of up to 14 days, a maximum speed of 26 knots (48 kilometers/30 miles per hour), and a range of 6,500 kilometers (4,039 miles).
