Saab Opens UK Manufacturing Facility for Radars, Underwater Robotics
Saab UK has officially opened a defense manufacturing facility in Fareham, southern England, to develop the Swedish firm’s radar systems and underwater robotics line.
The three-building site is part of the company’s 2023 investment and will be utilized to manufacture and support radars, particularly those operated by the British armed forces, such as the Giraffe 1X 3D radar, Giraffe AMB air defense radar, and TAIPAN (Arthur) artillery locating radar.
It will also extend similar services to its Seaeye underwater robotics line, including the all-electric subsea remotely operated vehicle Seaeye SR20, and meet the requirements of other international customers.
This endeavor provides up to 400 jobs and local apprenticeship opportunities. It also supports the UK economy and its upcoming Industrial Strategy, according to the country’s Secretary of State for Business and Trade, Jonathan Reynolds.
Meanwhile, Secretary of State for Defence John Healey expressed that “this major investment has demonstrated how defence is an engine for growth. Saab’s new facility strengthens support for the radars that help protect our Armed Forces, having created highly skilled jobs while driving innovation.”
“With promising apprenticeship opportunities, this site is helping to drive the jobs of the future – ensuring the next generation has the expertise to keep Britain at the forefront of defence technology.”
In January, the Swedish defense company announced its plan to open a new production facility in Finland to expand the manufacturing of Sirius Compact passive electronic warfare sensors.
