Brazilian Army Strengthens Arsenal With Turkish Heavy Machine Guns

The Brazilian Army has selected Turkish-made M2HB heavy machine guns to enhance its combat capabilities and modernize its arsenal.

The deal, which is still pending finalization, involves the supply of 200 M2HB Quick Change Barrel (QCB) machine guns from Turkish arms manufacturer Samsun Yurt Savunma Sanayi (SYS).

The weapons will be in the 12.7×99mm configuration, adhering to NATO standards.

According to local media outlets, the M2HB heavy machine guns will be deployed on the army’s wheeled armored vehicles, including the Guarani 6×6 and Guaicurus 4×4.

The contract is valued at approximately 100 million Turkish lira ($2.8 million).

A ‘Breakthrough’ Deal

In September 2024, the Brazilian Army issued a request for 200 heavy machine guns to equip remote-controlled and manually-operated weapon stations.

SYS competed against US companies Ohio Ordnance and Aquile International, as well as European firm FN Herstal.

The selection highlights Turkey’s growing influence in the global defense market, particularly in Latin America.

If finalized, the deal would represent one of SYS’s first major defense contracts in Brazil.

About the M2HB QCB

The M2HB is a NATO-standard heavy machine gun capable of both sustained automatic fire and single-shot firing.

Its QCB feature allows operators to change the barrel in just 10 seconds, minimizing exposure to enemy fire and enabling continuous operation.

The gun’s fixed headspace reduces the risk of damage to the weapon and injury to the user.

In addition to being mounted on armored vehicles, the M2HB QCB can be used on patrol boats, helicopters, and other aircraft.
