Iranian Navy to Receive Locally Made Zagros Combat Destroyer: Report

Iran has announced that its indigenously developed Zagros destroyer will soon start sailing with the Iranian Navy, state media reported.

The vessel is Tehran’s newest and most advanced destroyer, designed for both combat operations and intelligence missions, Press TV stated.

Iranian Navy Commander Admiral Shahram Irani said that the warship manufacturers “defeated the so-called American exceptionalism in the seas and oceans and showed that those areas belong to all nations.”

Irani also announced plans to open the country’s largest military hub in the strategic area of Jask, located in the coastal area of the Oman Gulf.

The hub will feature specialized dock posts equipped with cutting-edge technology.

Boosting Naval Capabilities

In recent years, Iran has been boosting its local military industry to enhance the navy’s capacity.

In November last year, Tehran announced that the Iran-built Sahand destroyer was about to be deployed in the northern Indian Ocean to increase security.

Moreover, in August 2024, the Iranian Navy received 2,640 missile systems and drones.

The acquisition included radar-evading cruise missiles with high-explosive warheads, Tehran Times stated.

In addition, the country is expanding its operations in international waters to safeguard its interests across shipping lanes.

In 2023, Iran’s 86th naval fleet completed a route of 63,000 kilometers (39,146 miles) during a mission that lasted over eight months.

The operation set a record for the longest journey by an Iranian naval group, reaching the Strait of Magellan between the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans, according to Iranian news agency Tabnak

The fleet included the domestically-built destroyer Dena and the Makran forward base ship.
