Ukraine Upgrading Captured Russian T-90A Main Battle Tanks: Report

The Ukrainian military has been modifying captured Russian T-90A main battle tanks to be redeployed in combat against their former operators.

They have reportedly been outfitted with a foldable mesh structure at the rear, enhancing protection against kamikaze drones.

The standard side screens have also been replaced with Kontakt-1 explosive reactive armor for better defense against incoming projectiles.

Additionally, rubber flaps have been added to the turrets to reduce vulnerability to anti-tank weapons.

Some of the components used in these upgrades are believed to come from other destroyed Russian tanks, including the T-90M.

According to open source intelligence group Oryx, Ukraine has captured at least 10 T-90As and destroyed 32 others since Russia’s invasion in February 2022.

About the T-90A

Designed to meet present-day combat needs, the T-90A is considered the backbone of Russia’s modern ground forces.

It is armed with a 125-mm smoothbore gun capable of firing both high-explosive fragmentation and armor-piercing ammunition.

The tank also features an automatic loading system, enabling a rapid fire rate of up to seven rounds per minute.

A T-90A crew consists of a driver, commander, and gunner.

The vehicle can also reach a maximum speed of 60 kilometers (37 miles) per hour, with an operational range exceeding 500 kilometers (310 miles).

Creativity in Adversity

Ukraine’s ability to retrofit captured Russian tanks showcases its resourcefulness amid ongoing supply challenges.

In September 2022, reports emerged of young Ukrainians assembling electronic components to create reconnaissance and attack drones.

Additionally, Ukrainian forces have used a so-called “FrankenSAM” weapon, which combines Soviet-era and American systems, to adapt to the evolving battlefield.
