Leonardo to Provide Submarine Hardware for US Navy

Leonardo has signed a $417-million deal to supply combat control and sonar systems hardware for the submarines of the US Navy and its allies.

The indefinite-delivery/indefinite-quantity contract will encompass design, fabrication, trials, integration, spares, and support for the company’s proprietary TI-26 hardware suite.

The TI-26 is a family of display, processor, and network systems under continuous development to match evolving underwater mission requirements.

It is specifically designed to support the US Department of Defense’s Submarine Warfare Federated Tactical Systems required for installation aboard America’s submarines.

Leonardo wrote that the solutions from the latest order will be distributed across the US Navy, its Australian counterpart, and the Pentagon’s foreign military sales program.

“We are very proud to again be selected as the design agent on TI-26 and are honored to support this critical submarine combat control and sonar system hardware program for the US Navy and allied partners,” Leonardo DRS Naval Electronics SVP and General Manager Cari Ossenfort stated.

“DRS is uniquely qualified for this program because of our agility, proven engineering processes, and experienced team, and that is also the reason we remain a trusted partner to Naval Sea Systems Command and Program Executive Office Submarine.”

Recent Naval Contracts With US

Leonardo accepted a $982-million multi-award project in June to develop payloads, sensors, mission support solutions, control systems, and autonomy software for the US military’s existing and future unmanned surface vessels.

In April 2023, the company received a $1-billion contract to deliver electric propulsion components for the US Navy’s forthcoming Columbia-class nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarines.

In 2022, Leonardo signed a $72.8 million contract to supply shipboard energy magazines for the navy’s fleet with directed energy or pulse power capabilities.
