The US Navy has tapped BAE Systems to perform maintenance and modernization work on the amphibious assault ship USS Kearsarge.
As part of the $294.7-million contract, the 843-foot (256-meter) ship will be drydocked for nearly a year to undergo extensive hull, tank, and mechanical work.
The British defense firm will also modernize living compartments onboard and inspect the vessel’s boilers.
According to BAE Systems Vice President Mike Bruneau, the agreement will allow the company to apply its substantial experience in sustaining ships of the class.
“Through our maintenance and modernization efforts, the Kearsarge will be ready to deploy for many years to come,” he said.
Work for the modernization contract will begin in April, with expected completion by January 2025.
BAE Systems has hired employees and temporary workers to prepare for the drydocking at Norfolk shipyard.
The USS Kearsarge
The USS Kearsarge is the third US Navy Wasp-class multi-purpose amphibious assault ship.
It is designed to carry and transport expeditionary forces and their equipment anywhere in the world.
The ship carries an air cushion landing craft for fast troop movement over water and onto beaches and an AV-8B Harrier aircraft to provide close air support.
The vessel can also carry more than 25 helicopters for search-and-rescue operations.
Earlier this year, the ship was involved in a year of government tests for Northrop Grumman’s new electronic chart display and information system.
It also participated in a recent US Navy mission, visiting multiple Baltic Sea ports to train and reinforce ties with regional allies.
