Northrop Bags $267M Deal to Supply MQ-4C Triton Drones to US Navy

Northrop Grumman has secured a $267-million contract to produce two additional MQ-4C Triton drones for the US Navy.

The deal is part of the service’s plan to have a fleet of 27 MQ-4Cs to bolster its intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) capabilities.

In addition to the high-altitude drones, Northrop will provide the navy with a main operating base as well as associated support services as part of the contract.

Most work will be carried out in California, with the project expected to be completed by October 2028.

In 2022, Northrop delivered the first upgraded MQ-4C Triton drone to the US Navy, featuring a 360-degree AESA maritime radar and a full-motion electro-optical/infrared sensor.

Key Features and Developments

The MQ-4C Triton drone is a high-altitude, long-endurance platform designed to “see farther, act faster, and identify quicker.”

With a 360-degree multi-intelligence suite, it reportedly offers four times the ISR coverage of other unmanned aerial platforms.

The drone can remain airborne for over 24 hours and reach altitudes of 50,000 feet (15,240 meters).

In September 2024, the MQ-4C demonstrated its ability to navigate in the austere environment of the Arctic.

The drone has also been redeployed to Guam after reaching initial operational capability in 2023.

In addition to the US Navy, the Royal Australian Air Force also operates the Triton.
