Iowa Firm to Deliver Sturmgewehr 25 Assault Rifles to Swiss Military

Lewis Machine & Tool (LMT) Defense has received a contract to supply Sturmgewehr 25 assault rifles to the Swiss Armed Forces.

The contract covers the 5.56×45-millimeter weapon modified from the Iowa-based company’s Modular Ambidextrous Rifle System – Light or MARS-L system.

These gas piston-enabled arms will be provided in 12 and 16-inch variants, according to German news agency Soldat & Technik.

The American firm has not provided additional information regarding the amount of the deal, quantity, or schedule.

LMT will work with Dietikon-based defense contractor Swissloxx to complete the project.

For Special Operations Unit

Soldat & Technik said that the Sturmgewehr 25 rifles will be distributed to the Swiss military’s special forces.

Currently, the command employs the Sturmgewehr 90 and its smaller, modernized version, the Sturmgewehr 07.

In previous contracts with Bern, LMT has also delivered the heavier version of the Modular Ambidextrous Rifle System, which fires a cartridge of 7.62×51 millimeters.

The weapon is designated as the Sturmgewehr 20 scoped assault rifle under the Swiss military’s 10th Armed Forces Reconnaissance Detachment, the country’s special missions and counter-terrorism group, as well as the Special Detachment of the Military Police for domestic operations.

Recent Military Projects

Switzerland’s firearms deal follows the government’s launch of its first Embraer Global 7500 long-range multimission aircraft as part of a special military and federal transport modernization initiative.

In November 2024, Bern announced the selection of the Remote-Controlled Howitzer 155-millimeter artillery system as the new primary weapon of the armed forces’ Piranha IV wheeled armored vehicle.

Six months earlier, the government opened bidding for the supply of advanced medium-range ground-based air defense systems for warfighters.
