HII’s Ingalls Shipbuilding has completed builder’s sea trials for Harrisburg (LPD 30), the first Flight II amphibious transport dock in the US Navy’s San Antonio-class program.
During the multi-day trials, shipbuilders tested the vessel’s propulsion, steering, ship-control systems, communications, mission systems, and combat systems integration. The tests assessed the ship’s major systems and their ability to operate together.
Harrisburg returned to the shipyard after meeting its major test objectives. It will now prepare for acceptance trials before its planned handover to the navy later this year.
“This successful sea trial is a critical step toward delivering this ship to the fleet and a testament to the quality of our shipbuilders’ work,” Stephen Janowski, Ingalls Shipbuilding amphibious ship program manager, said.
He added that LPD 30 would provide the navy and marine corps with enhanced capabilities.
Ingalls Advances San Antonio-Class LPD Program
Ingalls Shipbuilding is the sole provider of San Antonio-class amphibious transport docks and has delivered LPDs 17 through 29.
Harrisburg is the first ship in the program’s Flight II series, which continues the navy’s effort to maintain its amphibious fleet.
The ships are designed to transport marines, vehicles, equipment, and supplies for amphibious operations. They also provide a platform for launching and supporting landing craft and aircraft during missions.
Alongside Harrisburg, Ingalls has two other Flight II ships under construction: Pittsburgh (LPD 31) and Philadelphia (LPD 32). The shipyard is also handling early procurement and planning for three additional vessels: Travis Manion (LPD 33), LPD 34, and LPD 35.
