Sweden has awarded BAE Systems a contract for four Bofors 57Mk3 naval gun systems and Bofors 57mm 3P (Pre-fragmented, Programmable, Proximity-fused) ammunition.

Already in service aboard Swedish Navy corvettes, including those of the Visby and Gävle classes, the 57Mk3 will replace existing guns on some vessels under the new order. Deliveries are scheduled for 2028 and 2029.

“This contract reinforces our long-standing role as a trusted partner to the Swedish armed forces and FMV, and our commitment to supporting the Swedish Navy with world-class capability,” BAE Systems Bofors Marketing & Sales Director Stefan Löfström said.

“It demonstrates Sweden’s absolute confidence in the Bofors 57Mk3 and its advanced 3P ammunition as key capabilities for Sweden’s maritime defence.”

Olof Öhrström, unit manager for ship systems at Sweden’s defense procurement agency, said the weapons would “strengthen the navy’s ability to meet threats from, for example, both flying and surface drones.”

The Bofors 57Mk3 is a multirole naval gun designed for air defense, anti-surface warfare, and naval fire support. Its programmable 57mm 3P ammunition can be configured for different target types, including aerial and surface threats.

The system can fire four rounds per second, switch instantly between ammunition types, and carry 120 ready-to-fire rounds.

It has a maximum range of 17 kilometers (10.6 miles), while a computerized loading system and muzzle-velocity radar support rapid ammunition selection and firing accuracy.
