Ukraine has signed a memorandum of understanding with German sensor specialist HENSOLDT to explore the deployment and joint operation of TRL-4D LR long-range radars amid the persistent threat of Russian ballistic missile attacks.
With a reported range of more than 400 kilometers (249 miles), the S-band TRL-4D LR is designed for long-range air surveillance and detection of tactical ballistic missiles.
In addition to the TRL-4D LR, the agreement covers further deliveries of radar systems and the joint development of radar capabilities.
“The coming winter will be another major test for Ukraine, particularly for its civilian infrastructure. President Zelenskyy and the Ukrainian people can rest assured that HENSOLDT stands shoulder to shoulder with Ukraine. We are doing everything in our power to strengthen the protection of people and infrastructure,” HENSOLDT CEO Oliver Dörre said.
“The Ukrainian air defense forces urgently need our high-performance radars to help protect infrastructure such as bridges. The agreement is an important step towards ensuring this support is reliable and long-term.”
Germany has ordered four of the systems to replace the aging Hughes Air Defence Radar at the Brockzetel site in the country’s northern, with the first installation taking place earlier this year.
Additional HENSOLDT Radars
HENSOLDT has already been contracted to provide Ukraine with TRML-4D air defense and SPEXER 2000 3D MkIII short-range surveillance radars.
The TRML-4D is integrated with Germany’s IRIS-T SLM surface-to-air missile system, several of which have been delivered to Ukraine.
The SPEXER 2000 can detect and classify ground, sea, and low-flying air targets. The radar is also installed on the Skyranger 30 cannon-based mobile air-defense system, as well as the Feldlager and HoWiSM (High-Energy Laser for Drone Defense) counter-drone systems.
