Poland seeks to host about 15,000 US troops in the long term, combining a proposed permanent base with forces that rotate through the country, Deputy Defense Minister Stanisław Wziątek said, according to local media.
The figure would include 4,000 to 5,000 troops at a proposed permanent base, alongside 10,000 to 11,000 serving on rotation.
Wziątek said the buildup would take place in stages because Poland must first build the infrastructure to host a brigade-sized force.
He said Poland could host 15,000 US troops before 2039 if security threats accelerate the buildup.
The European country plans to introduce special legislation and dedicated funding for the base, which Wziątek said would cost more than 15 billion zlotys ($4 billion) to prepare.
Permanent Base Still Under Discussion
Poland’s latest plan builds on a longstanding effort to secure a permanent US military presence.
Warsaw previously offered up to $2 billion to help fund facilities for North American forces.
Washington has yet to announce a final decision.
US President Donald Trump recently said the two countries were making progress and that they could announce a location soon if the plan goes ahead.
Poland has sought closer defense ties with Washington as it modernizes its armed forces, amid repeated warnings from European governments and intelligence agencies about Russian security threats.
In June, Latvian intelligence said it had seen indications that Moscow might be preparing a military provocation against the Baltic states or Poland.
