The UK Ministry of Defence has awarded TKMS ATLAS UK a contract to develop and supply a next-generation torpedo countermeasure system for the Royal Navy’s current and future submarines.
Under the Next Generation Countermeasure (NGCM) program, part of the wider Underwater Defensive Aids Suite, TKMS ATLAS UK will work closely with Babcock, which will provide countermeasure launcher technology and platform-integration expertise for existing submarines.
“This contract reflects our longstanding role as the UK’s trusted provider of torpedo countermeasure research and development, and a trusted partner of innovation in the underwater battlespace,” TKMS ATLAS UK Managing Director Antoni Mazur said.
“NGCM will deliver a world-class capability that strengthens the underwater defence of the UK’s submarine fleet, while also creating opportunities for future growth and export.”
Contract Details
Designed to address evolving and emerging underwater threats, the NGCM program will use a spiral development approach to maintain its operational relevance and adaptability over the long term.
Neither party disclosed the contract’s exact value. However, an earlier government notice published in April 2024 indicated that the project could be worth around 35 million pounds ($47 million).
The contract is expected to run from October 2025 to October 2032, with TKMS ATLAS UK saying the work will sustain roughly 80 jobs in the UK.
