Rheinmetall has secured another large order for 155mm artillery shells as demand for ammunition continues to drive the company’s production expansion.
An international customer ordered a low five-figure quantity of 155mm projectiles under a contract in the low three-digit million euros. Rheinmetall booked the order in the third quarter of 2026, with production already underway and deliveries scheduled for completion in 2027.
The company did not identify the customer or specify the projectile type. It said the ammunition is already in service with various NATO countries and can be fired from a wide range of 155mm artillery systems.
The order adds to Rheinmetall’s growing ammunition workload as militaries replenish stocks and expand their artillery capabilities. The company has been increasing production capacity since 2022 and plans to produce around 1.5 million 155mm artillery shells annually by 2030.
In March, the company announced plans to convert its Berlin automotive parts factory to produce casings for 155mm artillery shells. The facility, formerly operated by its automotive subsidiary Pierburg, will shift from making engine pumps and valves to producing steel projectile bodies.
Rheinmetall’s 155mm Ammunition Pipeline
The latest order follows several major 155mm ammunition contracts that Rheinmetall has announced.
In July, Ukraine awarded Rheinmetall a contract worth tens of millions of euros for a low five-figure quantity of 155mm ER02A1 B/B projectiles and M203 propellant charges. Production is underway in Spain, with deliveries due by the first quarter of 2027.
That month, Rheinmetall also secured a separate contract worth tens of millions of euros to supply Kyiv with several thousand 155mm shells, funded by a NATO member state.
Earlier, in February, Denmark awarded Rheinmetall a seven-year framework contract worth several hundred million euros for ammunition, including 155mm artillery shells.
