Northrop Grumman, Marshall Propose Next-Gen UK Ground-Based Air Defense

Northrop Grumman has partnered with Marshall to develop a proposal for the British Army’s next-generation Ground-Based Air Defense (GBAD) program.

If selected, the project would create an integrated air defense system that meets the UK Ministry of Defence’s requirements using domestic engineering and manufacturing resources.

Northrop Grumman currently serves as the prime contractor for the US Army’s GBAD programs, including the Forward Area Air Defense (FAAD) and the Integrated Battle Command System (IBCS).

IBCS has also been adopted by Poland for its short-range air defense program.

Marshall brings experience in manufacturing containerized shelter and storage systems for military applications.

This includes components used in ground-based air defense systems such as the Fire Distribution Centre for Kongsberg’s NASAMS surface-to-air missile system.

Northrop Grumman’s Systems

Northrop Grumman’s systems are designed to provide warfighters with tools to support decision-making in complex threat environments.

IBCS is a modular mission command and fire control system that connects sensors, weapons, and command elements across domains.

It integrates data from various platforms to produce a real-time air picture.

IBCS enables coordinated targeting linking systems even if they were not originally designed to work together.

FAAD is a command-and-control system integrating radar input, target tracking, and engagement coordination into a single platform.

It supports missions such as counter-rocket, artillery, mortar, and counter-drone.

FAAD includes a new AI component that generates rapid engagement plans for threats such as drone swarms, updating data in real-time and supporting multiple weapon types.
