Saab to Supply Carl-Gustaf M4 Rifles to Canada

Saab has signed a contract to provide the Canadian Armed Forces with the Carl-Gustaf M4 man-portable, multi-role weapon system.

The $5.6-million deal includes an unspecified number of M4 units, as well as the Swedish firm’s Fire Control Device 558.

Delivery is set to be completed by March 2027.

Saab Canada President Simon Carroll said that the order shows the company’s proficiency in modern and combat-proven capability, expanding their base for Ottawa’s troops.

“Canada is an important customer for Saab, and we are proud to continue supporting the Canadian Armed Forces with systems that enhance their operational effectiveness,” Carroll shared.

The M4 is used by state forces in more than 50 countries, including Australia, Lithuania, and Poland.

The Carl-Gustaf M4

The Carl-Gustaf M4 is designed for portable infantry support, mainly used for close-range combat. Its 84mm ammunition is best suited for anti-armor and personnel missions, and has a rate of fire of six rounds per minute.

Each unit costs around $20,000, and its ammunition is priced at $500 to $3,000 per round.

Last year, Saab unveiled the Ground Combat Indoor Trainer, a virtual training program for M4 operators complete with “outstanding realism beyond anything else on the market” to prepare ground combat forces.
