Naval Group Explores Drone Integration on Greek Warships
Naval Group has signed a cooperation agreement with the Greek firm ALTUS LSA for the integration of drones on the Hellenic Navy’s surface ships.
Signed at the DEFEA exhibition in Athens, the memorandum of understanding covers a range of warships such as the FDI frigates and Gowind corvettes.
ATLAS-8 has been identified as one of the drone candidates for the initiative.
The electric octocopter platform is primarily designed for cargo transport, with a payload capacity of 50 kilograms (110 pounds).
Featuring a modular design, it can be fitted with missiles and other weapons for strike missions.
Moreover, the system is equipped with an inertial navigation system that allows it to operate in GPS-denied environments.
Integration of Counter-Drone System
The initiative stems from Naval Group identifying the potential of drones on naval platforms.
In a related move, the French shipbuilder struck an agreement with Hellenic Aerospace Industry (HAI) to explore the integration of the Centaur counter-drone system on Greek naval platforms.
An initial candidate being considered for the potential integration is the FDI frigate, which has been built by Naval Group.
“HAI is specialized in aeronautical solutions and maintenance, and Naval Group identified its skills and expertise for the development of the FDI programme for the Hellenic navy, and for potential future cooperation programmes,” Naval Group explained.
