Leidos Unveils Low-Cost ‘Sea Dart’ Uncrewed Underwater Vessel

American defense firm Leidos has unveiled a highly reconfigurable uncrewed underwater vessel (UUV), the “Sea Dart,” priced at a fraction of the cost of comparable platforms.

The company claims the versatile vessel costs “up to 80 to 90 percent less” than other small UUVs, with each unit starting at around $150,000, according to Jason Weed, an undersea subject matter expert with Leidos’ Maritime Systems Division.

The Sea Dart’s “cost-efficiency” is attributed to its use of commercial-off-the-shelf technologies, which minimize development and production costs by relying on readily available components.
