Spanish defense company Indra has developed a new Chinook CH-47F full-mission simulator, the first such technology manufactured in Europe for this version.

The system is now operational at the Spanish Army Aviation Academy’s Helicopter Simulation Center in Colmenar Viejo, central Spain.

Built with advanced simulation technologies, the system supports all phases of CH-47F crew training and enables networked exercises by connecting with simulators at other locations.

This setup supports coordinated mission planning, enhancing the pilot’s capabilities through realistic, joint training scenarios.

The technology works in combination with a flight training device and a computer-based trainer to provide a comprehensive simulation environment.

“Helicopters are increasingly complex and advanced platforms, which means that pilots require several years of training to acquire the level necessary to conduct a real operation,” stated Indra.

Features

Indra developed the Chinook CH-47F simulator using the same avionics as the aircraft to ensure system consistency and facilitate upgrades.

The simulator uses a four-channel LED projection system, including an infrared channel compatible with night vision goggles.

It also features high-resolution modeling of terrain and urban environments to support realistic mission planning.

The company noted that simulators are critical to maintaining operational readiness, emphasizing that the availability of deployable helicopters depends on the number of pilots with adequate training.

According to the Spanish firm, the simulator reduces the number of live flight hours required for crew instruction by up to 40 percent, which contributes to lower operational and maintenance costs.

This includes reduced fuel consumption, equipment wear, and ammunition use while maintaining flight safety standards.
