The French defense procurement agency has contracted Thales to supply hybrid networking kits for French Army vehicles.

The modular kits provide access to high-speed commercial communication services, including OneWeb and 5G, enabling connectivity in a wide range of tactical situations.

They complement other connectivity systems under the ASTRIDE 3 program, such as the latest-generation satellite terminals, high-capacity line-of-sight communications, tactical software-defined radios, and digital wireless services.

The kits are compatible with military vehicles like the Griffon, VBCI, and Serval and can be installed without requiring modifications to the vehicle’s design.

An initial batch of 25 kits will be delivered for field trials during the EXTO SJO 2025 exercise at the end of the year, followed by another 25 kits next year.

Eventually, all designated French Army vehicles will be equipped with the system.

Hybrid Networking Technology

The hybrid networking strategy integrates commercial networks with existing military communication systems to enhance battlefield connectivity.

Under the ASTRIDE 3 program, mobile, modular communication stations have been developed to provide NATO-interoperable networking capabilities.

These systems will establish a resilient network connecting command posts from theater level down to tactical units, supporting collaborative combat operations.

“Thales will be supporting the French Army in its strategic transition to hybrid communication networks,” said VP of Networks and Infrastructure Systems at Thales Alexandre Bottero.

“This latest stage in the ASTRIDE 3 programme will combine technological innovation with a deep understanding of operational requirements to provide the hyperconnectivity needed for collaborative combat in high-intensity conflict scenarios.”
