EU to Provide $21.5M in Military Assistance for Mauritania

The European Council has pledged 20 million euros ($21.5 million) under the European Peace Facility to provide military equipment for Mauritania.

The measure aims to assist the Mauritanian armed forces in promoting stability in the Sahel, countering potential destabilization, and enhancing security against both internal and external threats.

The new assistance builds on previous support packages, providing the West African country’s army with mobile land surveillance equipment and the navy with a second patrol boat.

The equipment will help improve the Mauritanian Armed Forces’ situational awareness within national borders and contribute to a continuous maritime presence.

EU’s Assistance to Mauritania

A key NATO and EU partner in the volatile Sahel region, Mauritania plays a strategic role in regional security.

The EU’s total support for Nouakchott under the European Peace Facility has reached 47 million euros ($50 million).

The latest assistance package adds to two previous measures worth 15 million euros ($16 million) and 12 million euros ($12.9 million) adopted in July last year and December 2022.

Through these measures, the EU currently provides the Mauritanian armed forces with resources for land and maritime military operations, including surveillance, deterrence, and intervention.

The European Peace Facility was established in March 2021 and is tasked with funding EU military or defense implications, aiming to prevent conflict and enhance international security.
