Lockheed Builds Russian Pantsir-S1 Mock-Up to Train F-16s and F-18s

Lockheed Martin has created a replica of the Russian Pantsir-S1 air defense system to evaluate the effectiveness of the targeting pods installed on F-16 and F/A-18 fighter jets.

The mock-up is mounted on a Peterbilt 320 cargo platform, typically used for garbage trucks.

The platform was transported to a secret location to evaluate the Sniper Advanced Targeting Pod, a key component of both the F-16 and F/A-18.

Reports indicate that both fighter jets flew over the replica while Lockheed collected data on the performance of the targeting pods under various conditions, including day and night, as well as clear and cloudy skies.

By simulating the enemy’s air defense system, Lockheed aims to enhance the precision and reliability of the targeting pods, which are designed to accurately detect, identify, and track targets from the air.

Refining Tactics

This is not the first time the US has created replicas of enemy defense systems for training or operational purposes.

In 2023, high-quality mock-ups of the S-300 and Tor-M1 air defense systems were seen being transported by rail.

This effort reflects a broader US approach of studying foreign defense systems to refine military strategies, create countermeasures, and enhance training effectiveness.

The recent test is expected to boost pilot confidence in the advanced targeting pods, particularly in their ability to distinguish friend from foe during combat missions.

Beyond training combat jets, these replicas can also be used in exercises where certain units are designated as “opposing forces,” allowing for more realistic and effective training scenarios.
