Taiwan Military to Procure Four Types of Attack Drones: Official

The Taiwanese military is set to acquire four distinct types of kamikaze drone to enhance its lethality in the face of growing regional threats, according to a senior official.

The first type of drone will be designed for precise short-range strikes, while the second will specialize in carrying and launching loitering munitions. The remaining two types will feature vertical takeoff and landing capabilities, with one equipped to carry missiles for high-impact strikes.

According to the source, the procurement is aimed at countering China’s military expansion and its so-called “gray zone tactics” — actions that fall short of full-scale conflict but exceed ordinary diplomatic measures.

The drones designed for short-range strikes will carry out direct attacks on enemy positions, while those capable of carrying loitering munitions will support surprise suicide attacks.

China continues to view Taiwan as a renegade province, repeatedly threatening the use of force to reunite it with the mainland.

Investments in Unmanned Systems

Taipei has made significant investments in drones and unmanned platforms to strengthen its defense and better respond to evolving security challenges.

The Center for a New American Security has noted that both Taiwan and its key ally, the US, will need long-range drones to effectively counter a potential Chinese invasion.

In November 2024, Taiwan’s Ministry of Defense signed an agreement with Washington to purchase nearly 1,000 new attack drones.

Additionally, Taiwan is pursuing potential collaboration with Lithuania in drone technology, which is expected to enhance its position in the global unmanned aerial vehicle supply chain.

The Taiwanese government has also ordered four additional MQ-9B SkyGuardian drones from General Atomics to bolster its surveillance and reconnaissance capabilities.

‘Peaceful Reunification’

Despite its increasing military activities around Taiwan, China’s foreign ministry reiterated Monday that the country is making every effort to achieve “peaceful reunification” with its neighbor.

“At the same time, China will take all necessary measures to safeguard national sovereignty and territorial integrity,” Foreign Minister Wang Yi stated.

While calling for peace, the minister asserted that Taiwan would never be a “country” and that anyone supporting its independence is “interfering” with China’s internal affairs.
