BEL Delivers Swathi Weapon Locating Radar to Indian Army

Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) has delivered the Indian Army’s 49th Swathi weapon locating radar, enhancing its defense capabilities along the contested borders with China and Pakistan.

The delivery completes the latest batch of 12 radars ordered by the army in March 2023. Notably, the transfer was completed ahead of schedule, as the final radar was expected later this year.

A ceremony to commemorate the milestone was held in the northern state of Uttar Pradesh, attended by BEL representatives and Indian Army officials.

The Swathi weapon locating radar is expected to significantly strengthen the Indian Army’s operational readiness, particularly in mountainous terrain.

Emphasizing Self-Reliance

The delivery of the 49th Swathi radar underscores the Indian Army’s commitment to the “Make in India” initiative, which prioritizes domestic defense development over imports.

Developed in collaboration with the Defence Research and Development Organisation, the Swathi radar is 85 percent indigenous, relying heavily on India’s domestic supply chain.

With a detection range of up to 50 kilometers (31 miles), the radar can identify and locate hostile artillery, enabling precise counter-strikes.

Prior to the final delivery, the Swathi radar underwent rigorous acceptance tests, ensuring it met stringent performance benchmarks.
