Estonia Opens New Barracks at Ämari Air Base

Estonia has inaugurated three new barracks at the Ämari Air Base in Harju County to accommodate active military personnel in the region.

With a total area of 15,000 square meters (161,458 square feet), the centers will house army, naval, and air force troops stationed and training at the installation.

In addition to the military’s corresponding utility and storage capabilities, additional spaces will be offered to allied forces to be deployed in Estonia.

“In November 2024, we reopened the Ämari airstrip, and in December of the same year, we completed maintenance and training garages at the air base for daily maintenance and training of defense equipment,” Estonian Defence Investment Center (RKIK) Portfolio Manager Steven Linkov remarked during the ceremony.

“The barracks being opened today will significantly improve the accommodation and training conditions for our conscripts, active military personnel, and allies.”

The deal to construct three modern barracks in Ämari was awarded to local companies Merko Ehitus Eesti AS and Ehitus5ECO AS in 2023.

At the recent inauguration event, Merko Board Chairman Jaan Mäe highlighted the cooperation between the consortium and the RKIK in building the facilities.

“The surrounding infrastructure and the performance of technical systems are very important to ensure comfortable living and learning conditions for active military personnel, allies and conscripts,” Mäe said.

“The construction of several technical systems took place in parallel with the construction of the barracks. We are very grateful to the RKIK and the units of the Ämari Air Base, with whom it was possible to carry out extensive and very diverse work within a short period of time.”

Estonia’s Ämari Air Base

The Ämari Air Base became an international military location in Northern Europe after the end of Soviet occupation, serving as a contact point for missions between the Baltic states and NATO partners.

Since its reopening, the strip has received a series of upgrades to address the requirements of Tallinn’s warfighters and their counterparts.

In addition to military personnel housing and airborne fleet stations, Ämari will soon incorporate an ammunition and explosives factory for the Estonian Defence Forces and allies.
